Renegade Sufi Dawoud, sitar
Dawoud has found within the sitar, and the other instruments he plays (guitar, bass, dilruba, etc.) a means of instilling an experience of the spiritual and a beauty beyond what we experience with our senses. Dawoud began to play the guitar about half a year or so after Jimi Hendrix died. Shortly afterwards he expanded his listening tastes into jazz, fusion, classical, blues, and Indian raga. His teens were spent honing his guitar skills.

On his 18th birthday, he bought his sitar and began teaching himself the rudiments of the instrument from books and recordings. Between 1979-83. Dawoud toured the Midwest US with Focal Poynt as multi-instrumentalist, composer. He also began teaching guitar and learning audio engineering. In 1983, he moved to New York City, and did work as a musician and musical director locally and toured with a number of local rock groups.

In 1994 Dawoud decided to abandon rock music, and sought exclusivity in jazz and eastern music. Short tours of the Eastern US followed.

The University of the Streets was incorporated in 1969 as a non-profit educational organization, spearheaded by Muhammad Salahuddeen, a jazz aficionado, artist, and activist. Over the past 40 years U.O.T.S. has been committed to addressing the educational, vocational and cultural needs of the community all while presenting some of the most cutting-edge and renowned musicians and performers at its second floor theater. Initially, U.O.T.S was launched to help "deprived" youngsters break out of a hopeless poverty-cycle by providing vocational training and exposing them to the to the invaluable world of music, especially jazz. Now, 40 years later, the target population has expanded with respect to age and ethnicity, and more and more genres of music are incorporated into the curriculum and performance schedule. Since its inception, countless lives have been turned around and many graduates have achieved amazing success. U.O.T.S. has gained a wealth of experience in educating young people, and continues as a forerunner in establishing innovative approaches to teaching.
